Just wondering are you doing any tour of your Tom Crean play around Ireland? – I live in Kenmare, Co. Kerry and a new 140 seater, state of the art Theatre called Carnegie Arts Centre has just opened in the town. This venue may be of interest to you if you are touring – Thanks Con Hodnett

Hi Aidan,
I saw you in Tom Crean on sat nite in the Olympia and it was the best play ive ever seen. You had me in tears at times laughing and the play itself was so educational. Im from Dingle in Kerry myself and was thrilled at how Tom was portrayed.
Great Job!

Dear sir.
I have just completed writing a one man play, that has been the focus of my attention for the last four years. I am very happy with it, but now realise I have to go through the arduous red tape of putting it on in Dublin (and beyond depending on its success).
If necessary I’m prepared to fund it myself, and, based on your single minded mission to get your own one man play to the level of esteem it now enjoys, I would consider it an honour if you would give me some advice on the steps I need to take to make my play come to the stage. I have skills in theatrical makeup, and I know the play inside and out, so I wouldnt need any direction. I would be honoured if you would get back to me.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Garvey.

Hey Aidan,
I saw you in Dublin in 2006 I believe it was doing Tom Crean.
You know I never loved theatre until I saw your performance! I was so amazed at how enraptured I was just listening to your talk for hours. I wish it had never ended, really.
I live in Washington D.C. now and was wondering if you’ll ever be doing that performance on this side of the ocean anytime?
Otherwise, I know it won’t be the same, but could I buy a copy of your performance anywhere?
Thank you SO much! And best of luck!

Re: Tom Crean Arctic Explorer. Do you take bookings for small venue performances – audience 100 – 120?
We are based in West Berkshire (not far from your Croft hall performance)and are looking for a performer for a Sunday evening in late November.

Your performance of “Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer” at Andrews Lane theater a few years ago is my all time favorite theater performance. Your storytelling style really suits teaching about history and overcoming challenges. I’m currently a “telementor” for kids (unfortunately labeled “at risk”) in Topeka, Kansas. The class is based on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey. The book probably won’t carry the impact of one of your productions. Since you probably don’t have time to tour Kansas and the many other places where “at risk” children live, I wonder if you have plans to produce a movie? I completely understand that a movie can’t possibly have the intimacy of your live show in a cozy theatre such as Andrews Lane, but it might be able to reach a wider audience.
As someone born in the U.S. and living in Ireland, I don’t think it is too much of a stretch for Americans to be able to understand your accent and Crean’s colloquialisms (except for those with ultra short attention spans such as a certain NYC critic.) If U2 can pull them in, you certainly can. I hope you’re enjoying this season. We hope to take my seafaring parents to see you in Tallagh the end of September.

Aidan,
Wonderful to meet you last night, quite the best piece of theatre I have seen in 20 years. Thank you for bringing my Antarctic Expereince back to life. One of the things you cant take with you when you leave the ice is the feeling of the Antarctic Silence, its as if she only gifts it to those that walk into her interior.
Thank you and let me know when you are playing in the UK and I will bring a troup with me.

Dear Aidan,
Hello for the first time!
I am acting as the senior researcher for the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo (est. 1974). Recently I have been in touch with Brian Kelly at the Discovery Point Museum in Dundee and he introduced to me briefly about your impressive work on Tom Crean for them.
From Nov 17 to 22, I will be visiting London on a business trip. I wonder if you have any performances in the London area during then. I would very much like to see your acting a play.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Mr Aidan Dooley,
at first, please excuse me for my awful English. It’s still difficult for me to write in a foreign language especially when not using it for awhile or like now, if it’s past midnight after a hard working week. I am not sure if I rather should write you tomorrow or during Christmas or in the New Year, or now. Totally unexpected, I found your activities around Tom Crean while surfing thru the internet and I just decided to start our acquaintanceship yet.
Besides that, I spent some hours at our famous Irish Pub today, because a large Christmas market is nearby. However,
my name is Sven Voege. I am 44 years old. I am born in Berlin, Germany.
My profession is construction engineer, but my mission is Polar adventurer.
We have a non-profit association called Polarworld (www.polarworld.de),
details later.
We are planning a stage play with young people about the race to the South Pole between Scott and Amundsen when the 100 year anniversary comes in the 2011/2012 season.
Therefore, I would be glad, if we will find a way to work together and if you like to come to Berlin in order to present your show.
Thomas Crean is an amazing person. For a gala evening about climate change and my enthusiastic about Tom Crean, I had invited the Irish Ambassador in Germany past summer.
It was an honour and first step for Polarworld.
Today, I just liked to introduce myself and my project and would like to wish you and your family a good start into the Christmas week and hope that we will find time and interest for a working together,
I thank you for your time.
With all good wishes
Sven Voege

Dear Aidan,
Really enjoyed your excellent Tom Crean performance last night here in Westport. Undoubtably one of the most entertaining performances on stage that I have seen. Thank you so much for your generosity of time and spirit towards the local school fundraising event. The enthusiastic standing ovation at the end of the show said it all. Thank you. KH

March 28th, 2009 at 12:21 am
Hey. As I’m sure (in fact I can plainly see) you’ve heard before, your performance of Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer is amazing! It’s just about the best piece of theatre I’ve seen in a long, long time. I think it’s possibly the best play ever to grace the stage of the Baby Grand in the Grand Opera House Belfast, and I really hope you bring it back because it sold out before I could share it with my mates.
Thank you for bringing it and for a wonderful evening.
All the best in France!

Hi Aidan,
I met you at Gouganne Barry Hotel last year. I spoke to you about a book on the history of 1000 famous Irish people… “The Irish Who Shaped The World”. Please drop me a line and perhaps we can meet when you are over in Gouganne next month… and i can give you a look at what we have built… so you will have a better idea of what we are at.

hi aidan,
I saw the production at the Gouganne Bara hotel july 16th 2009, was bowled over by it, i remember my parents raving about it when they went to see you the previous time you were there so i jumped at the chance to see it . I must admit i have read a lot about tom crean and shackleton previously but there was a lot of extra detail in your show that i didnt know and your performance really brought the story told in the black and white photos of frank hurly and the previous expeditions to life.
Was a good kerry accent as well!
good luck with the rest of the tour
cheers

Hi Aidan
I saw the production in Gougane Barra on the opening night and it was absolutely fantastic. I had seen it previously in the Gaitey, and as it happened the opening night coincided with a family get together in Gougane so i brought my mam and dad , sister and her husband to it and they like me were in awe of your craft. Your ability to make the audience feel like they are there in the South Pole taking every step with you is spellbinding. The “fingers” are just fantastic. Congratulations on all your awards.Well deserved. Fantastic. 15 out of 10!!!!!!!Keep up the good work. Thanks to you Tom won’t be an “Unsung Hero” for much longer.
Kindest regards

Tom Crean has been a hero of mine.I saw you perform in the Taliesin in Swansea in Nov 2007 and have not forgotten your superb acting and storytelling. Please make a return visit to South Wales.

Hi Aidan,
I went to see you last night in the Olymia Theatre in Dublin and I absolutely loved your show. I have been interested in Tom Crean for a number of years, having read Michael Smith’s book ‘Tom Crean, An Unsung Hero’.
Your performance was outstanding in everyway. Your enthusiasm, humour and rapport with the audience was unforgettable. I see you’re preforming in Killarney on the 26th Oct and I’m teaching locally, I know this is a big ask but would you be available to come and talk to the students? I appreciate you have a busy schedule but it would mean so much to them and me if you could make a bit of time for us. Please think about it. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes, Irene

Aidan, just had to contact with CONGRATULATIONS on a wonderful performance at the INEC last Monday night. You had me and the whole audience spellbound. I have always been in awe of what Tom Crean did back in those years with no communications with the outside world. Started to read Unsung Hero again last night and you have helped greatly to understand it. Continued success. Up the Kingdom and the Tribesman!!!.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Hi Aiden, saw you at Gougane Barra back in the – do we call it a summer? But the sound effects of the wind outside created a perfect atmosphere for the show! Anyway I said I’d get in touch as I’m a costume maker and you never know!….. MOST impressed with your performance and the way you managed to so realistically portray the feel of Antarctica!! Be in touch!!
November 16th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Are you performing in Dublin – or anywhere in Ireland – during December/09 or during the first months of 2010 ?
Would love to have an early reply. We saw you as Tom Crean in New York at The Irish Rep. You were fantastic.
We want to give tickets to our family in ireland as Christmas presents. They would be so lucky!!!

just saw your Tom Crean performance in Cork, went with my daughter who is obsessed with him, but have to say, was bowled over by your performance, cant even begin to say how much I enjoyed it,you made the whole story come to life, well done on a truly magnificent play!
January 12th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
Aidan,
Was at the Tom Crean show last night in the Everyman in Cork. You did a fantastic job. I read the “Unsung Hero” book 10 years ago and it was the best book that I read in 20 years. Loved your interpretation of his adventures and how you portrayed him as such an interesting, jovial and indomitable character. Also wondereful to see how you portrayed the simple countryman with his dreams of fantastic adventures to undiscovered corners of the world. You did a brilliant job of making him into a loveable hero. As a Kerryman it is great to have such figures to fire our imaginations and ambitions.
On a completely different note, I teach in a secondary school in Cork city. We are celebrating 50 years of the school this year and we are trying to set out the values and standards that we admire and respect for the next 50 years. It would be brilliant to have the Tom Crean show in the school to show how ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. Any possibility of having your show in the school hall sometime in 2010.
Good luck with your work.
Le meas,
Dáithí O hAodha

I have to say that last week i was dragged along to the everyman palace theatre and when i say dragged – i mean dragged. From the opening scenes i was totally and utterly enchanted. A truly magical performance with the best timing of any actor that i have seen on stage.
Thank you for a very memorable night and i really do look forward to seeing this play run for many more years to come.
Kind Regards

I just saw Tom Crean in Oulu Irish music festival and it blew me away. Thank you for visiting us here in Finland, your magnificent performance won’t be forgotten in a long time!
October 8th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Aidan,
My family came to see the show at Salford’s Lowry theatre back in 2006 and I’m a huge admirer of Tom Crean and we all loved the show. You may remeber sitting chatting with us afterwards. Just to let you know I’ve started a group on facebook to bolster an initiative to rename Kerry Airport Tom Crean Airport in his memory. It would be great if you might consider joining the group as we already have the author of “An Unsung Hero” Michael Smith lending hs support. To anyone else who reads this and is aware of the great man – it would be great to see you all join a worthy cause and who knows? if it comes off we can all celebrate in the South Pole Inn. Thanks from all his fans for keeping the memory alive in your superb show Aidan.

Wondering when and if you were starting to tour with O’Sullivan Beara.
October 29th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Dear Aidan,
Here in the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork there is an exhibition on view now called “Portraits and People: Art in Seventeenth Century Ireland”. The exhibition, which includes the great portrait of Domhnall O’Sullivan Beare, is open to the public today.
I think it would be a great shame if the opportunity is missed of having at least a part of the O’Sullivan Beare solo play performed in the Gallery space during the course of the exhibition, which runs until the end of January.
I realise you have a busy schedule but look forward to hearing from you hopefully.

Dear Mr Dooley
I work as a teacher at a primary school called Wouldham All Saints in Wouldham, village, Rochester, Kent. You attended this school some years ago as Tom Crean and the staff here have great things to say about your visit here. I realise it is a long shot but here goes. You are very busy with your tour dates and I am not sure where you live but is there any possibility at all you could come and see my Year 2 class who are doing a topic called Arctic/Antarctic adventures. If you could help in any way at all I would be most grateful. If you can please let us know your charges/travel expenses.
In hopeful anticipation

Your performance as Tom Crean on the MV POLAR STAR while sailing to Elephant Island was exactly like being in an Irish pub many years ago listening to Tom telling his story to friends and admirers. You richly deserved the standing ovation from everyone on the ship.

You were fantastic when I saw you doing Tom Crean at the Brighton Festival I think it was 2008, and wondered if you were planning a return to Brighton or the south of England to do Tom Crean again. I have relatives that would love to see you – your performance was so rivetting, this is from a female who hasn’t been to the theatre for years!!!
April 2nd, 2011 at 11:51 am
Sir,It was an honour to shake your hand after last nights performance of O.B. in Chatham.Having previously so enjoyed your ‘Crean’ twice, my friend and I traveled from Brighton happily for the opportunity to see this new play. We were not disappointed , It had the gripping style and warmth toward your audience that we had expected. We await your next appearance on our theatre-going radar, although it would be lovely if it was here on the south coast.

Jesus, you don’t let the grass grow under you fella! Trying to get Pat to see a show at the fringe festival in Dublin in September. Nothing to do with me but written by a very talented actor called Damian Kearney. Anyhow, hope you and Miriam and the family are keeping well. Take care fella,

We look forward to hearing from you.

I just attended your play in the Olympia “Tom Crean” and was blown away. The level of skill envolved in compiling the piece and the way in which you protray the character was fantastic. The attention to detail in the script and the use of the explorers diaries was absolutely genius. The interaction with the audiance was perfectly fitted into the performance and I thoroughly enjoyed every second. Perfect little play one of the best I have ever seen.

Hey Aidan ,heard you on Moncriffe. You said you’d like a new project. Have you heard the story of Aiden Mc Carthy from Castletownbeare? His amazing story of surviving extraordinary events in WW2 is told in his book “A Doctor’s War”. You could make a fine job of it. Loved Tom and O’Sullivan Beare.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:51 pm
Hi Aidan,
I saw your show in Dublin a few years ago. Loved it! I am now a primary school teacher and was hoping to take an excerpt from the show and have one of the boys perform it at as a recitation for Scor na bPaisti. I’ve tried to find it on dvd but to no avail. Is there any way you could help me out? It’s needs to be under six minutes long. This boy is only seven so it will be four mins max. If there’s any way you could help me out i’d appreciate it.
Thanks!
Colette from Cork.

Hi Aidan. I’ve seen you in Tom Creen twice and really enjoyed it. I have a relative who is a huge supporter of the theatre but has recently lost her sight. It was a show so steeped in storytelling that I was wondering if you had ever done a recording of the show? I’m quite sure that she would love it.
February 24th, 2012 at 9:45 am
Aidan,
Question. Did you ever work for AIB in London? I used work for BOI and I remember meeting a guy at a party (maybe in Muswell Hill where I lived – with Pat Crowley? Mark Brennan? et al) and he said to me that he wanted to get into acting. This was back in early/mid eighties. Just wondering if it was yourself. If it wasn’t, sorry for taking up your time, if it was, fair ducks to you! rgds Barry

Hi Aidan, we were in Sligo’s Hawk’s Well last night for your show. What a performance! For the first time ever I could not wait to give you a standing ovation. You and your show are superb. Well done. I hope you come to Sligo again, if not, I’ll travel for an encore. Well done.
